This is our first IB DP senior art exhibition! As part of the IB exams, students enrolled in the DP visual arts course must present their artwork in an exhibition. Each student had their own theme that they worked on during the year and used their choice of materials for each artwork. Students are graded on the relativity of the artworks in connection to their theme, exploration of materials and application of technique.

This is the same Manifesto project I did previously from 2015, with a different approach to the background. Once students were done, they placed their manifestos throughout the school hallways for their peers to see and by inspired by.
Materials:
They had the option of choosing between a famous quote, part of lyric from a song, or a motto they believe in. They then illustrated an image that related to their text. Took "how to" pictures so that students could see how to prepare their mask for their projects. Materials:
For this project, we explored the works of Jose Guadalupe Posada, a Mexican printmaker who created political satire cartoons that addressed the political injustices in Mexico during his time. Students analyzed how this artists and many other printmakers used contrast as well as positive and negative space when creating a print. They also practiced adding shading techniques such as hatching, cross hatching to create a range of value in the artwork. Students were asked to choose and research a story: fable, fairy tale, urban legend or narrative they are familiar with. They then created 3 thumbnail sketches detailing a scene from the story. Once they chose their final sketch, they transferred their drawing backwards using carbon paper. Utilizing different carving nibs, they carved away the negative space on the linoleum block and printed their final print. Materials:
As a practice project before moving on to more complex printmaking techniques and skills, students created a drawing on sheet of styrofoam--the kind you get from take out boxes. We removed the flat piece of the box and used a dull pencil or ball point pen to draw a design. Students based artwork on combining two monuments or buildings from different parts of the world. Once they created their drawing by pressing the styrofoam, they painted a sheet of watercolor paper with various colors and used printmaking tools such as brayer, ink, and plexiglass to transfer the image to paper. The dance committee students are currently working on creating decorations for the Sweetheart Dance coming up Valentines Day week! So far they are creating giant sweetheart candy with cute messages, and paper mache flowers that they will glue to large hearts. My Drawing and Painting class studied the skeletal anatomy for this project. Students practiced their skills in creating value and used various watercolor techniques such as: salt, oil pastel resist, bubble wrap among others. They created their own pattern to repeat in the background as a colorful contrast against the black and white bones.
Students explored architecture from different parts of the world and created a setting that was influenced by the chosen countries. They used 1 or 2 point perspective and included at least 4 illusion of depth tricks in their artwork. This year our homecoming theme is Dia de los Muertos. The homecoming committee is working on creating large scale sugar skull posters to post throughout the gym. The kids thought it would be a great idea to not only honor those that have passed but also current famous figures. Take a look at the gallery to see the exciting designs! |
