For this project, we explored the works of Jose Guadalupe Posada, a Mexican printmaker who created political satire cartoons that addressed the political injustices in Mexico during his time. Students analyzed how this artists and many other printmakers used contrast as well as positive and negative space when creating a print. They also practiced adding shading techniques such as hatching, cross hatching to create a range of value in the artwork. Students were asked to choose and research a story: fable, fairy tale, urban legend or narrative they are familiar with. They then created 3 thumbnail sketches detailing a scene from the story. Once they chose their final sketch, they transferred their drawing backwards using carbon paper. Utilizing different carving nibs, they carved away the negative space on the linoleum block and printed their final print. |
